I think “virtual” means that something is different from the real one. The friendship between Violet and Jess were not what Violet wanted anymore, but she relied on her “virtual friendship” because she was afraid of facing the reality. However, the time with her Mum and Eline was totally “real”, so I guess she will be able to build a “real” friendship with her in the future.
