英語学習者用の Graded Readers のシリーズ。物語はオリジナルのものと古典やポピュラー小説の簡約版があり、さらに実話や歴史の裏話などもあり、読み応えのあるものばかりです。
読書の前に、裏表紙の紹介文、物語の前書き、巻末の Glossary(語注)を読んでおくと、理解がスムーズです。
このシリーズは、単語や文法、1文の長さ、物語の長さなどの難易度がよくコントロールされて書かれているので、同じステージの本で「難しい」「易しい」の違和感を感じることがありません。ただ、MGR, PGR, CER と比較すると、1文が長い文が多いので、少し難しく感じるかもしれません。自分の読めるステージの本をなるべくたくさん読みましょう。
OBW1が中3前期までに読めるようになるのが友の中学生の目標です。また、中3以上の授業の課題本となることもあります。高3で OBW6 がすらすら読めるといいですね。
この本棚には、表紙のデザインや色が違うものも並んでいますが、旧版・新版とも中身は同じです。
OBW0 は、OBW1～6 とは全然違う印象のシリーズです。マンガ形式や、読みにくく感じる形式の本もあり、好きずきです。自分に合いそうなものを選んで読みましょう。OBW0 を読まずに OBW1 から始めてもいいです。
